VICTORIA handyDART TRANSIT CENTRE
Victoria, BC
This facility will be the technical and operations centre for the first all-electric bus fleet for BC Transit. The two-wing building complex will accommodate, administration, technical, and operations personnel offices, as well as vehicle maintenance, charging and parking functions. Natural toned materials were selected to visually harmonize the architecture with its setting, as part of the overarching goal to integrate the project within its ecological and suburban neighbourhood context. This LEED Gold Certified project includes a restored fish-bearing creek, indigenous cultural interpretive elements, and enhancement of the adjacent Galloping Goose Regional Trail.
A regional headquarters that houses administration, operations, maintenance, recharging and storage functions for this key transit service. The facility is comprised of a public-facing office wing and a large vehicle maintenance garage. Natural toned cladding visually harmonizes with its setting that includes a formerly derelict, now restored fish-bearing stream and wetland. The semi-urban site includes augmentation and enhancement of the adjacent regional cycling trail and the location and landscape are designed with cultural interpretive elements developed in collaboration with the Esquimalt Nation. The project targets LEED Gold certification from the CaGBC.
