CRAIGFLOWER COMMUNITY HALL

Located on a National Historic Site of a colonial farm, the land was made available by the Provincial Heritage Branch as a home for the local Highland Games Association. The much-needed community hall is seen as an augmentation of the historic site and heritage building. Conceived as a circular multi-purpose space surrounded by ancillary spaces, the hall is a venue for a range of arts, cultural and social events and includes a sprung dance floor. The geometry is inspired by ancient Scottish circular stone buildings and gathering places, as well as circular and crescent forms of Coast Salish designs.  The shape and siting also conform to the curved geometry of the corner site. Materials are drawn from historic and regional references with mass timber and stone as well as wood finishes inside and out. The geometry of the timber roof-structure, references Celtic knots, and features prominently in the main Hall. The building is sited to preserve views to the Heritage Manor House and create new views from inside the Hall of the Gorge inlet.
