BEACON PARK PAVILION

This structure is simple, durable, and finds a poetic elegance in the expression of its practical purpose as an outdoor performance venue. The stage and canopy are located in the apex of Beacon Park, with a popular pier and the water as a backdrop. The stage is oriented toward the enhanced natural slope of the park, creating a green amphitheatre with the terraces of the hotel beyond as balconies. The layered, shell-like pavilion is high-tech in its design and material choices, yet calls back to the traditional craft of wooden shipbuilding. Four thin and taut wooden sections of outer shell with zinc roofing are stretched over rib structures. These ribs of engineered wood are gathered and fixed to the platform by steel pin connections, creating the impression of a delicate and light canopy.
