THE MONTROSE WINTER-GARDEN HOTEL
Victoria, BC

Located at an important downtown intersection and adjacent to a heritage designated 1912 apartment house, the podium-tower form is envisioned as a landmark and adds needed hotel capacity to the city. The design accommodates an apartment hotel, two levels of office space, a fifth-floor lounge/ restaurant and terrace, and a ground floor multi-use mass-timber-framed glass-enclosed atrium and connects the four floors of the podium with an elevator and spiral stair. The podium fills the urban lot and maintains the street-defining scale of the historic context with façade rhythms, and materiality. The shape of the 20-storey tower is derived by composing the facades to angle toward views and exploit solar orientation for each suite. The walls of the tower are accentuated by shaped-bronze, vertical cladding and with the plan angles of the penthouse corners, give the facade a dynamic effect. Changes in hue and brightness will occur at different times of the day and in night lighting, as well as a distinctive silhouette when back-lit. The atrium is situated at the southeast corner and is conceived as a richly planted winter-garden for building users and the public. With tall trees, this space will be a welcome green oasis at the prominent, urban intersection.
