MILLSTONE WATERFRONT PROJECT
Nanaimo, BC

A comprehensive urban design plan for the redevelopment of a 7.2 acre property at the estuary of the Millstone River to the waters of the Straight of Georgia. It will bring 760 new residences, a 120-room hotel, 1200 square feet of commercial / retail space, and a 0.3 acre park to the northern edge of downtown adjacent to an urban waterfront park. The plan is for a mixed-use, neighbourhood that will define the northern edge of City’s downtown. It will connect to and restore the heavily disturbed and derelict water’s edge, and link the Mill Street neighbourhood via a new public linear park and pathway, with that of the waterfront park.  The majority of the buildings will be mid-rise and, with a hotel on the major highway and street intersection, and two high-rise towers beyond, the redevelopment is intended to become a gateway landmark. The vision of the proposal is that of an extension of the City’s 19th century urban design, and support the commercial center  with needed housing while restoring and connecting more of the city with a long-neglected water’s edge.
