DESPARD HOUSE

Set in a leafy neighbourhood of one of Victoria’s oldest suburbs, the site’s orientation and topography posed some challenges but afforded southern exposure, views, a private backyard and level entry from the street. These characteristics set the tone for the progression from the higher street level, through the main living floor, to terraced outdoor living spaces. The main windows and doors of the kitchen, breakfast alcove, dining area, living room, family room and small office, all open to the south with views of the pool and large landscaped yard.

The focus, and spatial division of the interior on the main floor, as well as access to the second floor and basement, are accomplished by a sculptural combination of cast concrete fireplace, chimney, and wood staircase. The stair opening provides an overlook to the first floor and brings light into the center of the house. The private rooms on the second floor are also positioned to receive light from the south and west and, with a large cantilever, place the main bedroom suite over the pool deck and yard.

The exterior of the house is vertical ship-lap Shou Sigi Ban cedar siding with zinc flashings, fiberglass-framed windows and steel canopy structure and details. The layered horizontality of the house is emphasized with split facia around the second-floor roof.  Surrounding the house, on and off-site, the landscape is a rich blend of mature trees, box hedges and shrubbery.
