The Masshtab Company in Moscow hosted this competition to develop new standards for urban block typologies. Based on a 25m grid system with 75m to 125m block lengths, the design required a wide range of adaptability. The concept submitted consists of a kit of urban housing components assembled to create courtyard blocks. The courtyard form promotes community, security, and access to daylight and views. Configurations vary in response to density targets, solar orientation, urban context, and market preferences, generating variety in the urban fabric. The buildings’ formal simplicity promotes versatility, allowing them to adapt to a range of unit types and uses, and to change over time.
